The Blennerhassett Archeological Project is a joint effort between Horizon Research Consultants, Inc., West Virginia University, Blennerhassett Historical Foundation, West Virginia Humanities Council, West Virginia Natural Resource Conservation Service and West Virginia State Park Service to reconstruct the formal flower gardens and associated buildings of the Blennerhassett Estate.
The archeological investigation conducted consisted of Phase III Excavation to determine not only the original placement of the formal flower garden but also the original contents of the garden through seed analysis. Ground penetrating radar, a nonintrusive technique, was used in identifying buried foundations and structural remains in the project area.
This effort was intended to preserve the cultural resource associated with the Blennerhassett estate. The historic reconstruction of the Blennerhassett gardens and the associated structures will provide additional tourist attractions to the Blennerhassett Island State Park.
